Haori was originally a men's garment, and is said to have evolved from jinbaori.[2] Around the mid-Edo period, the so-called Fukagawa geisha (Tatsumi geisha) became famous for wearing haori.
From the Taisho to prewar Showa periods, women began to attend social events such as kabuki, tea ceremonies, class reunions, and hobby clubs, and haori, which had been men's formal attire, came to be 新品 as women's "outing wear" as well.
